Online Advance Placement Courses

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Your child may have interest in taking an online Advance Placement course at John F. Kennedy High School.  This is an academic class which helps prepare the student for the AP subject test.  Additionally, five elective credits will be awarded to the student upon successful completion of the course.  The student’s grade in the course will be calculated into the student’s grade point average (GPA), and a poor grade may affect eligibility for sports and other school activities.  The credits can be used for graduation requirements.

The AP courses will take place in the computer lab at the Kennedy HS Library.  I’m the AP Onsite Facilitator and will assist students with technology, administrative issues, and ancillary assignments.  Textbooks will be issued to the students.

The courses are a program of LAVA (Los Angeles Virtual Academy) and taught by the instructors at Apex Learning.  You can find more information at www.apexlearning.com and www.lausd.net–keyword LAVA.

The courses require the student to meet the same high standards as a classroom based course.  They must study the material, post demanding assignments, and meet deadlines.  Students may find an online course more rigorous than a classroom based course.  Course syllabus will be provided.

Students and parents are required to sign and submit the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Acceptable Use Policy.  The form is available in the library.  A school district email account will be assigned to the student.

Students can choose to do their coursework either before or after school.  Students are required to sign in and sign out each day.

For general questions, you may reach me at 818-271-2986.  For specific questions about your child’s academic records, requirements and goals, contact his or her counselor.  The counseling office can be reached at 818-271-2934.

Sincerely,

Glen Martinez

Teacher-Librarian / AP Onsite Facilitator
